Electric SUV · 100% electric

EX40

The XC40 you already like — fully electric.

The EX40 keeps everything that made the XC40 a hit and swaps the gas engine for one of the smoothest electric drivetrains Volvo builds. Same footprint, same familiar cabin, but silent and much quicker.

Hi, I’m Inna. I put this page together for anyone considering the EX40.

Everything here is what I usually walk my clients through in person — the trims that actually matter, how the powertrains compare, and what the numbers look like. If a question pops up, just text me. I answer fast, and I’ll save you the back-and-forth with the floor.

What makes it different

The three things I’ll say about the EX40 first.

01

Familiar Volvo cabin

Same layout as the XC40 — but quieter, quicker, and with a real frunk for charging cables.

02

Two ways to buy it

Single motor for range-first buyers, twin motor if you want the 4.7-second 0–60 and true AWD confidence.

03

Level 2 charging that just works

Charges from 20% to 80% overnight on any standard home Level 2 setup.

The EX40 is the XC40 you already like, without the gas station. If you've driven the XC40 and liked it, this is a short decision.
Overview

Formerly badged XC40 Recharge, the EX40 is available in single-motor extended range or twin-motor AWD. It's the easiest transition to electric for anyone stepping out of a gas Volvo or a compact German SUV.

Best for
  • XC40 loyalists ready to go electric
  • Home-charging households wanting one predictable EV
  • Drivers who want SUV height without EV bulk
  • Anyone cross-shopping the Genesis GV60, Mercedes EQB, or Tesla Model Y

Single motor or twin motor is mostly about how you drive and where you park in winter. Tell me both and I'll point you at one.

Same cabin quality as the XC40, quieter at speed. The quietness is what switchers comment on first.

Straight answers

What an EX40 actually costs to own

The fair comparison isn't sticker to sticker — it's payment plus fuel plus maintenance against the gas XC40. I'll run both side by side for you so the electric decision is made on real numbers, not vibes.

EV incentives and lease programs depend on how you buy and change regularly. I'll confirm your current eligibility before you count on it.

What people worry about
  • Is electric worth it for me?

Sometimes no. If you can't charge at home and you road-trip a lot, I'll point you back at the gas XC40.

  • I don't want a long dealership visit.

Do it by text with me. Come in once, drive it, sign.

  • Will the price change?

You'll have the out-the-door number before you make the drive.

A note from Inna

If you love your XC40 but the fuel bill bothers you, this is the trade-in I want you to look at. The single-motor extended range is the one I recommend for most of my Falls Church clients.

Questions I hear a lot

About the EX40.

How's it different from the EX30?+

The EX40 is a little larger, a lot more familiar if you're coming from an XC40, and has more usable cargo. The EX30 is the quicker, more design-forward pick.

Do I need Twin Motor?+

Only if you regularly drive in snow or want the performance. Single motor extended range is more efficient and cheaper.

Tax credits?+

EV credits are moving targets. I'll pull the current-week federal + Virginia summary for you before you sign anything.

The mistake I see: comparing the EX40 to the XC40 on sticker price alone. Look at the monthly plus running costs — it changes the answer.
